This asteroid was discovered Oct. 28, 1937, by astronomer Karl Reinmuth of Heidelberg, Germany. He observed it for 5 days, and then lost it. The asteroid remained lost for an incredible 66 year period before it was re-discovered by Lowell Observatory astronomer Brian Skiff on October 15, 2003.
Interestingly for me, I managed to image Hermes only one day later (October 16, 2003), see the images below. On October 17, 2003, I managed to shoot a 2 hour time-lapse video. See the video here (compressed to 30 seconds):
